Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is caused by the Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Aphthovirus genus within the Picornaviridae family. The disease is named for its characteristic lesions typically found on the mouth and hooves of affected animals.

FMD primarily infects cattle, swine, sheep, goats, water buffalo, and various wild cloven-hoofed animals, and it is not considered a typical zoonotic disease. Transmission routes include aerosols, direct contact, and contaminated environments. Clinical presentations commonly include vesicles on the oral cavity, tongue, and hooves, with infected swine frequently exhibiting lameness and a reluctance to move.

Understanding Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Foot-and-Mouth Disease virus primarily targets cloven-hoofed animals, encompassing cattle, swine, sheep, goats, water buffalo, and various wild cloven-hoofed species. Human infections are exceptionally rare because FMDV has an extremely low affinity for human cells, generally resulting in no clinical symptoms. The very few documented human cases have presented as mild, self-limiting infections, meaning FMD is not classified as a typical zoonotic disease.

Transmission routes of Foot-and-Mouth Disease include:

  • Aerosols, such as respiratory droplets and excretory dust
  • Direct or indirect contact with infected animals or mechanical vectors
  • Contaminated environments, including clothing, equipment, and facilities

Classic clinical symptoms are characterized by vesicles, commonly localized on the oral cavity, tongue, and hooves. Affected swine frequently present with lameness and a severe reluctance to move. Post-mortem lesions typically include oral ulcers, hoof vesicles, and myocarditis in piglets.

    The Sentinel Plus FMDV NSP 3ABC Antibody Rapid Test Kit targets the NSP 3ABC antibody. Because Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines typically contain only structural proteins and exclude non-structural proteins, vaccinated animals generally do not produce antibodies against non-structural proteins like 3ABC. However, during a natural infection, the virus replicates inside the host and produces non-structural proteins, including 3ABC, triggering an antibody response. Detecting 3ABC antibodies helps differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA).

    The Sentinel Plus® FMDV NSP 3ABC Antibody ELISA Kit targets the NSP 3ABC antibody and can be used to determine whether animals have been naturally infected with the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus. In terms of the diagnostic window, antibody levels typically peak around one week post-infection as antigens begin to decline. While vesicles and lesions caused by FMD in swine gradually become prominent 3 to 5 days after infection, antibody titers in the blood become higher than antigen levels at this stage. Consequently, testing for antibodies offers superior sensitivity compared to antigen detection.

    The primary circulating serotype of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) is Type O. While Type A and Asia 1 strains also exist, Type O remains the most common and highly contagious variant. Consequently, monitoring the immune response to Type O is critical for DIVA vaccine development and protective immunity assessments. Following FMD vaccination, animals produce antibodies against the viral structural proteins, specifically targeting SP Type O. Therefore, testing SP Type O antibody titers serves as a reliable benchmark for evaluating vaccine efficacy and herd protection.
